What is an Anemometer?

An Anemometer is a device that measures the wind velocity. Simply put, Kestrels are all anemometers!

There's no doubt that it's a mouthful to say - here's the correct pronunciation: an-uh-mom-i-ter

There are various types of anemometers, including: rotational, pressure tube, deflection, thermoelectric, ultrasonic and LASER Doppler. They all measure the wind speed using different methods, and the results vary in accuracy. The Kestrel anemometer uses an impeller that is calibrated to be able to read the wind speed/velocity to withing +/-3% accuracy.

Simple anemometers are the stuff of middle school science projects. It's easy to assemble an elementary anemometer using a few paper cups and cardboard strips. Digital anemometers are available in a range of sizes, prices and accuracies.
